A Kaleidoscope of Colors and Flavors Awaits in Marrakech

The souks of the Marrakech Medina
Marrakech is a kaleidoscope of swirling colors and flavors. It is bold mosaic and intricate artwork from floor to ceiling. It is warm mint tea, warm earthy spices and warm desert air. It is equal parts prime hospitality and persistent haggling. My husband and I celebrated my birthday there in November and it was all at once a dream come true and an over-stimulation of the senses. I returned to London feeling like I’d just been on an adventure – a feeling I hadn’t had since driving (or should I say riding – I was the passenger) the West Fjords of Iceland, where we were often the only people in sight for miles and the terrain was so craggy, you could have convinced me we were traversing the surface of the moon or were the last people on a post-apocalyptic Earth.

Eating in Marrakech can mean anything from going stall to stall at the Place Jemaa el Fna (the main central square, located in the medina) to enjoying a home-cooked meal in a riad or indulging in first-class fine dining.

Here are some of my favorite dining experiences in Marrakech:

Christmas in Vienna: 5 Ways to Eat Your Way through A Winter Wonderland

When they talk about a “winter wonderland,” I’m pretty sure they’re talking about Vienna.

As a wistful teenager, with a yearning to know what more was “out there” and a desire to travel the world to finally be reunited with places that I’d never actually visited, I had a romantic notion of Vienna as a place where I could sit in opulent cafés, consuming endless amounts of hot chocolate and pastries. Turns out, there was something to that notion.

When my husband and I arrived at the Austrian capital earlier this month, we knew we wanted to visit the famed Christmas markets (Christkindlmärkte) but also expected we’d take in some architecture, some history and maybe even a little opera. However, one step into our first Christkindlmarkt and we knew we didn’t stand a chance against the magic of Vienna’s holiday festivities.

Slàinte! Cocktails, Whisky & Artisan Coffee in Edinburgh

View from Princes Street Gardens
With fewer than 500,000 residents, Edinburgh is not a huge city but between the architecture, history, gorgeous views and, of course, the whisky, there’s plenty on offer for visitors to enjoy. The obvious time to go to Edinburgh is summer, when temps max out at around 65°F (18°C), and hundreds of thousands of visitors descend on the town for the annual Fringe Festival, “the largest arts festival in the world,” which takes place over three weeks every August. Instead, my husband and I visited the city during Halloween and were rewarded with a laid-back, beautiful autumn weekend.

From Line Dancing to Tattoos: Nashville + New York City

Last month I made my first trip back home to the States since moving to the UK. Technically, I was on a business trip: I was scheduled to attend the annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo, being held in Nashville, Tennessee. But over the course of two weeks, I also got to spend time with family and visit some of my favorite spots in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the North Fork of Long Island, and even Darien, Connecticut. Finally, the most rewarding hours of my trip came on my very last day, when I had the honor and privilege to assist with just one of 13 P.ink Day mastectomy tattooing events being held simultaneously across North America.

Wow! I knew the Danish were leaders in design but I was in for a beauteous surprise when I arrived in Denmark and quickly learned that, often, their design-consciousness carries over into the delectable foods found all over Copenhagen and made with pure love.

Each time we sat down to eat in Copenhagen, just one glance down at our plates revealed dishes that were made with a sincere attention to detail. It wasn’t just the focus on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. It was also having the finest of ingredients on offer, enjoying house-made cheeses and breads (Oh, the bread! The bread was insanely good all over Copenhagen.), and sitting down to the most beautifully presented plates of food — even in casual settings. Each time I found myself with food in front of me, I was hesitant to stick my fork in it because it would mean messing up the beautiful scene before me.

Prague: Coming to Terms with Czech Cuisine

I’m just gonna cut right to the chase. Here’s what I learned in Prague: I don’t exactly love traditional Czech food. There, I said it. Maybe that’s not such a surprising thing for me to say (if you know anything about Czech food and its reputation) but I had no idea what to expect from Czech cuisine before landing in Prague. Now that we are in London and can book travel with a lot less advanced planning, I’m learning to embrace the concept of arriving in a city that I don’t know much about and allowing it to introduce itself to me (instead of attacking it with a list and guidebook in hand).

Help With a Healthy Diet During and After Cancer

When I was a Dietetic Intern at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP), my favorite rotation was Oncology. Not only were the patients the best (I cannot explain it other than to say that, collectively, they had an infectious good spirit) but also, it was rewarding to be able to offer my patients relief from side effects of cancer treatment by suggesting small changes to their dietary intake. For example, eating small, frequent meals throughout the day may make it easier to keep down food and consume much needed calories and nutrients when dealing with nausea, vomiting, mouth sores, taste changes, and/or negative reactions to the smell of food. After my own diagnosis of DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ; pre-invasive breast cancer), I am even more interested in nutrition as it relates to cancer.

So, I was excited when Living Beyond Breast Cancer recently hosted a Twitter chat, called "Healthy Eating After A Breast Cancer Diagnosis." One of the panelists of the LBBC Twitter chat was Stacy Kennedy, MPH, RD, CSO, LDN, a fellow Registered Dietitian (RD), and a Board Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition, who works at the Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center in Boston, Massachusetts. Stacy shared a great resource for those who have questions about nutrition, and food safety, during and after a cancer diagnosis.

Personal Ink: A healing art

PictureBTW - P.ink is pronounced "pea ink"
The idea to adorn my own mastectomy scar with a tattoo came to me before I'd had any of my surgeries, while reading Geralyn Lucas' Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy. At the end of the breast cancer memoir, Geralyn shares how she opted to not get nipple reconstruction but instead got a small winged heart tattooed near her mastectomy scar. I too had decided not to go with any of the available nipple reconstruction options and the moment I read about Geralyn's tattoo I knew this was something I needed to do.

I heard about Personal Ink last fall. This organization would be providing breast cancer survivors with mastectomy tattoos on "P.ink Day", which would be held in my own hometown of Brooklyn, NY, 3 years to the day since my doctor called to say cancerous cells had been found in the tissue taken during the core biopsy done on my left breast. I told my husband I was getting a free tattoo and he said "um...things you pay for" but tattoos are really expensive (one reason I hadn't yet gotten one), I didn't know the first thing about finding an experienced artist on my own (P.ink would provide artists who have mastectomy tattooing skills) and these people seemed legit (P.ink was founded by the VP, Director of Experience Design at ad agency Crispin Porter + Bogusky).

This past week, my mom and I attended a discussion on breast cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC). The talk was part of an ongoing series at MSKCC called CancerSmart:

"Memorial Sloan Kettering experts discuss the latest information on cancer-related topics, as well as advances in diagnosis, treatment, and research at our CancerSmart talks. We believe the more you know, the better equipped you will be to make informed choices about your health.

Programs are presented in the fall and spring on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. They are free and open to everyone. They are also available via live webcast. Join the conversation on Twitter at #CancerSmart."

Here are 5 takeaways I got from the interesting and engaging panel discussion.
